Municipal landfills are increasingly using synthentic liner systems to ensure containment of contaminents and prevent them entering the groundwater. This can include GeoPro Membrane, Laviosa GCL and GeoPro NetDrain/StripDrain to control the leachate generated inside the landfill and remove from site. In addition GeoPro Geotextiles are used to protect the liner from damage and combined with drains to allow for venting or collection of methane gas generated inside the landfill.
When landfills are closed then a cap or final cover is placed over the waste to mininise any water ingress into the landfill. This will reduce amount of leachate generated and the impact on the landfill drainage and leachate treatment system. It is standard practice to use geomembranes or GCL in these applications.
Final restoration of the landfill site will involve various revegetation and erosion control techniques to ensure long term stability to the final cover.
